Boat Overturns in Mediterranean Leaving 50 Missing
The sole survivor received rescue from a commercial vessel and was transferred to a Malta hospital where treatment is ongoing.
Based on the survivor's account, the vessel departed Libya on Thursday before capsizing the following day. The individual clung to debris and drifted in the sea until rescue arrived.
Following the incident, search and rescue missions were initiated, though 50 people continue to be missing.
Statistics from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that 14 individuals have disappeared or been confirmed deceased in the Mediterranean since this year began. Throughout 2024, deaths and disappearances along this migration route totaled 1,873.
