UN praises Libya for completing third phase of municipal elections
“The process was conducted in a generally calm and orderly atmosphere,” with an estimated voter turnout of 69%, according to reports citing the national electoral commission.
The UN mission commended the efforts of local authorities, security forces, and election observers in maintaining a safe and secure voting environment. It also emphasized “the importance of respecting the integrity of the electoral process and using established legal mechanisms to address any potential electoral disputes,” reaffirming support for Libyan-led initiatives to promote “inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral processes.”
On Saturday, voters in Tobruk, Qaminis, Sebha, Tokra, Al-Abyar, Suloug, Benghazi, Sirte, and Qasr Al-Jadi participated in the third phase of municipal elections. Earlier phases included the first round in 58 municipalities on November 16, 2024, followed by a second phase launched on August 16.
According to the electoral commission, a total of 922 candidates, including 284 women, competed for 87 council seats across the nine municipalities.
Alongside municipal elections, Libyans continue to aspire for parliamentary and presidential polls as a means to resolve ongoing disputes and divisions that have persisted since early 2022.
The country remains politically divided between two administrations: one based in Benghazi, appointed by the House of Representatives and led by Osama Hammad, controlling the east and much of the south; and the internationally recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, which governs the west.
