Turkey retrieves black box from Libyan army chief’s plane crash

(MENAFN) Authorities in Türkiye have recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder from the remains of a private aircraft that went down near the capital Ankara, killing Libya’s army chief and others on board, according to official statements released Wednesday.

Officials confirmed that the debris field from the crash covers an area of about three square kilometers, highlighting the scale of the impact zone.

“As a result of the work carried out at the scene by teams from the Transportation Safety Investigation Center of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the aircraft’s voice recorder was recovered in the wreckage area at 2.45 am (2345GMT Tuesday), and the black box was found at 3.20 am (local time),” he said.

The analysis phase has now started, with specialists examining the recovered devices to determine what caused the aircraft to crash.

Emergency and investigative operations at the site remain extensive, with 408 personnel deployed alongside 103 ground vehicles and seven aerial assets, according to officials overseeing the response.

It was also confirmed that a Libyan delegation comprising 22 members has arrived in Ankara.

The group includes relatives of the victims as well as representatives from Libya’s defense and interior authorities, as stated by officials.

“We are also very curious about [the cause of the crash], but this data will reveal the cause, and the authorities will share the findings with you,” he said.

Condolences were extended to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to the Libyan leadership and public, with the incident described as a “tragic accident.”

Earlier statements indicated that the aircraft involved was a Falcon 50 business jet that departed from Ankara’s Esenboga Airport en route to Tripoli. The wreckage was later located by security teams roughly two kilometers south of Kesikkavak village in the Haymana district.

In the aftermath of the crash, Libya’s Government of National Unity announced a three-day period of national mourning.
