Libya Declares National Mourning After Death of Army Chief

(MENAFN) Libya announced a three-day period of national mourning on Tuesday following the deaths of Army Chief of Staff Mohammed al-Haddad and four senior officers in a plane crash near Ankara.

In its statement, the Government of National Unity expressed condolences to the victims’ families and members of the Libyan Armed Forces.

The announcement noted that during the mourning period, all government institutions will lower flags to half-mast, while official ceremonies and public celebrations will be suspended.

“The Government of National Unity extends its sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased and to their colleagues in the armed forces, praying that Almighty God bestows His vast mercy upon them, grants them eternal rest in His spacious gardens, and blesses their families and loved ones with patience and solace,” the statement read.

Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh instructed the Defense Ministry to dispatch an official delegation to Ankara to work directly with Turkish authorities in reviewing the details of the crash.

The tragedy coincides with Libya’s Independence Day commemorations on December 24–25, marking 74 years since liberation from Italian rule, which will now be observed under mourning.

Mohamed Menfi, head of Libya’s Presidency Council, also expressed sorrow over the loss of Haddad and the four senior military officials.
